Royal Windsor 2011

Posted in: Shows on Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

First time competing at the Royal Windsor Horse Show. Two great Working Equitation demo’s, one in the main arena. Viriato was amazing completing all the obstacles and behaving impeccably. The crowds loved it and it was a great opportunity to spread the word about Working Equitation!

Many thanks to Catherine Smith for letting me take Viriato. I competed Xá in the Pure and Partbred Portuguese Lusitano class. Sixteen entries and Xá behaved very well getting placed 5th.

Also competed in the Parade Horse class and amazingly got placed again, 6th. Really didn’t expect to get rosettes when competing on a young partbred against some of the best in the country. A fantastic day!

Posted in: Shows on Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

The Suffolk Show is one of my favorite shows, a great atmosphere and lovely to see the same people every year! Viriato and I took part in the Working Equitation demo along with the other team riders. A great crowd pleaser!

Xá was on top form winning the In hand Partbred, Ridden Partbred and Championship. He behaved well in the Parade Class and did his first demo with the Pine Lodge team. Couldn’t ask for more!

Woodbridge Show 2011

Posted in: Shows on Friday, May 6th, 2011

Fantastic start to the showing season with a double win at the Woodbridge show. Xá was on top form winning the In hand Lusitano and the Ridden Lusitano classes. Especially pleased to win on a part bred whilst competing against purebreds.

It was a fantastic day, even getting placed third in the Parade Class against some really experienced horses. EDP did a great write up too, congratulations to Holly.

I’m really pleased with the Cambridge clinics, there have been some great horses and riders attending them. They are a lovely group of people who encourage and support each other. As the clinics have continued numbers have increased and everyone has made big improvements. Having the article in the Autumn Issue of Luso News really helped publicise the clinics, very pleased

European Working Equitation Championships 2008

Posted in: Shows on Monday, October 20th, 2008

Seven British riders competed recently at the European Working Equitation Championships which were held on 10th-12th October 2008 at the Horse Country Resort in Arborea, Sardinia.

Teams from Italy, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Sweden and Great Britain were represented in the senior competition and two individual Austrian riders also took part. Belgium, Italy and Great Britain also each fielded 3 junior riders, to compete in the junior section.

The British team members, led by chef d’equipe Sherene Rahmatallah, comprised of Holly Barber, riding the 10 year old gelding, Rafa and Alexandra Downing who rode the 7 year old mare Uxaria – both horses are owned by Sue Barber, the proprietor of Pine Lodge School of Classical Equitation. Sarah Way rode her 11 year old gelding, Ortega and Tori Peter, from Cheshire rode her 8 year old stallion, Sueste. Individual rider, Marcia Wakeman from Buckinghamshire had to substitute her team horse at the last moment for one of the junior horses.

The junior team riders were Charlotte Lee riding Wee Spot, Natasha Reid riding Vicosa and Holly Barber riding Rafa, all of whom train at Pine Lodge. All riders have been competing this year in a series of competitions across the UK, organised by the UK ruling body Working Equitation UK, in preparation for Sardinia.

European Working Equitation Championships 2007

Posted in: Shows on Thursday, September 20th, 2007

The 9th European Working Equitation Championships were held at Hartpury College, Glos on 31st August – 2nd September.

Twenty five Working Equitation riders from 5 countries – Spain, Portugal, Italy, Great Britain, Belgium and Sweden contested the Championships in the brand new Hartpury Arena.

Working Equitation is a discipline which brings the traditional skills of working horses in the field into the confines of the modern competition arena. This requires a high level of control and submission. The whole competition is ridden with the reins in one hand and riders wear the traditional outfit of their particular country.

The British team comprised Alex Downing, Holly Barber, Jo Evans, Diane Clough (these 4 riders are all from Pine Lodge School of Classical Equitation, Norwich), and Leila Rahmatallah – chef d’equipe was Sherene Rahmatallah.

The European Working Equitation Championships were held in conjunction with the inaugural Iberian Performance Show – a 2 day festival of dressage, equitation and showing classes for over 70 Spanish horses and Portuguese Lusitanos.

THE 2nd WORLD WORKING EQUITATION CHAMPIONSHIPS 2006

Posted in: Shows on Friday, November 10th, 2006

The 2nd World Working Equitation Championships were held at the Sociedade Hípica Portuguesa, Campo Grande, Lisbon on 27th – 29th October. Countries represented were Portugal, Italy, France, Spain, Mexico and Great Britain.

Great Britain was represented by Alexandra Downing on Mafioso, Holly Barber riding Galan, Diane Clough riding Queluz and Leila Rahmatallah with Morena. Alexandra Downing, with Mafioso, was the highest placed UK rider, finishing in overall 15th place; Holly Barber also gave very good performances and finished in 17th place in the individual competition.

The obstacle/style section was the strongest section for the British riders – at the end of the first 2 parts of the competition , the flatwork and the obstacles (style), the British team stood ahead of the French team.

In the speed section the fastest UK riders were Alexandra Downing (17th) and Holly Barber (20th). Prior to the start of the cattle test, Great Britain had put in a request to compete in this section hors concours – the British team was down to 3 riders also, as Morena had been withdrawn due to the lameness.

This request by the British team was met with approval by several key members of the competition’s organisation but was refused by the judges, so the decision was taken to withdraw the UK team from this section.

The II World Working Equitation Championships reflected the excellent organisation of the APSL and the Sociedade Hípica Portuguesa, and the warm hospitality shown towards all visiting riders was very much appreciated. Representatives of working equitation in Belgium and in Sweden came to watch the Championships, and attended the meeting of WAWE (World Association of Working Equitation) which took place in Lisbon, and expressed their intention to send riders to future championships.
